Wi-Fi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance. A Wi-Fi enabled device such as a personal computer, video game console, smartphone or digital audio player can connect to the Internet when within range of a wireless network connected to the Internet. The coverage of one or more (interconnected) access points called hotspots generally comprises an area the size of a few rooms but may be expanded to cover many square miles, depending on the number of access points with overlapping coverage.

Point-to-Point & Multipoint

Point-to-point generally refers to a connection restricted to two endpoints. Point-to-point is sometimes referred to as P2P or Pt2Pt. This usage of P2P is distinct from P2P referring to peer-to-peer file sharing networks. Point-to-point is distinct from point-to-multipoint where point-to-multipoint also refers to broadcast or downlink.

Point-to-multipoint communication is a term that is used in the telecommunications field which refers to communication which is accomplished via a specific and distinct type of multipoint connection, providing multiple paths from a single location to multiple locations.
